It’s a difficult time right now for independent businesses, and we’d like to highlight some businesses in Nottingham that show the spark of the city, which are still open for business and so we can all come together and boost our local economy!

White Rose

It’s hard to walk anywhere in Nottingham city centre without coming across a White Rose store - there are seven in Notts itself. White Rose was founded with the aim of offering ‘lovingly hand-picked recycled fashion.’ People can buy designer and high street fashion for a fraction of the price. From starting out by using a clothes bank system to collect donations, the stores have been a huge success, with recent expansion for the stores.

 

Stores sell either mens or womens clothes - and profits go to the Aegis Trust, founded by Dr James Smith of the National Holocaust Centre in Laxton. The charity campaigns to prevent global genocide and crimes against humanity.

Another? Wine Bar / The Tap House

Another? Wine bar and The Tap House are Nottingham’s first ever self-serve wine and beer bars, located in the city centre. Jointly managed by brothers Sam and Tom, the ventures have been popular for Nottingham, with their convenient pour-it-yourself method.

 

While they’re closed, they’re offering delivery deals for people who are missing out on their wide array of drinks. Another? Wine Shop is offering a bottle of wine and a cheese board for £20, among other deals. While you can get a crate of different IPAs and beers for £22 from The Tap House.

Handmade Nottingham

Handmade Nottingham opened in 2014 as a Chistmas pop-up, and is still going from strength to strength now, recently opening its biggest shop yet on Kings Walk. The shop sells an abundance of handmade gifts, homeware items and clothing, all made by local designers. They also regularly host workshops, where people can make their own wreaths, learn calligraphy and create plant hangers.

While they’re closed, you can still buy everything online on their website.

Kerry’s Fresh

Since 1885, local family business Kerry’s Fresh has been delivering fresh produce to people of Nottingham. All of their fruit and vegetables are locally sourced, and they’re facing unprecedented demand right now, as people look to shop local.

Right now, delivery may take a little longer than expected, but you can purchase more local goods from Kerry’s. They offer eggs, coffee, infused oils, cheeses, bakery goods and more. FYI - some of these may come and go from the website depending on the season.

Waste Nott

At Paguro, we love brands that help the environment, and this store in Sherwood is a sustainable pioneer! Zero waste store, Waste Nott, has only been open since summer 2019, and is a project which provides food with no packaging.

Customers bring their own containers in, and fill them with foods such as cereals, grains and spices, or even products such as soap bars and toiletry liquids, and then weigh the container before paying.

If you’re someone who is trying to avoid single-use packaging - Waste Nott is the place for you!

Filthy Vegan

With a mission to popularise vegan food, Filthy Vegan is a takeaway which has been named one of the best vegan kebab places in the entire of the UK.

 

They want meat eaters, veggies, pescatarians and vegans to eat their food - with no agenda to convert people, just to provide plant-based food which everybody can enjoy. Based on Kings Walk, you can order their food on Deliveroo - but be quick - they sell out fast.

Founded by Jordana while she was studying in Nottingham and realised there weren’t many healthy food options, her aim is to be a friendly, neighbourhood eatery (they’re based next to Savoy Cinema) and offering an all-day dining menu inspired by people she’s met and places she has been to. She’s also got both a bachelors and masters degree in nutrition - something she brings to the cafe.

Sweet Success

Easter is coming - and while we’re cooped up inside why not make your own Easter Eggs?! Sweet Success is a family business which has been running since 1993, specialising in ready-to-decorate cake bases and sugar icings for people to decorate their own cakes.

You might not want to make a cake, but why not order their famous fruit cake and then add a personal touch to make it your own one Sunday? Or create your own chocolate Easter egg with their egg mould which works well with any melted chocolate.

Outpost Coffee

Looking for a great coffee fix? Outpost Coffee, based across from Mowglis on Broadway Street, sell speciality coffee with exceptional tastes. They also sell food which has their own special spin on it - from vegan blondies to pastrami bagels with a black bun.

They have some fab values, including providing better pay and support for coffee growers, through good farming and processing practices, and investing in the training and development of industry professionals.

Little Brickhouse

Based out of a shipping container which used to move goods between the Far East and America, the Little Brickhouse Cafe is one of the quirkiest places to eat in Sherwood.

Of course, the eating area is now closed for the time being, but that’s not stopping Katharina, who is still serving food influenced by her and her partner’s German and Norwegian heritage.
